History Of South Dakota

The area that became South Dakota was added to the United States in 1803. The first permanent settlement was established at Fort Pierre by the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804. In the 1800s, the settlement of the territory led to clashes with the Sioux. The territory was incorporated into the union on November 2, 1889, along with North Dakota. A major part of South Dakotas economy is tourism. A lot of visitors want to see Mt. Rushmore. Mt. Rushmore is a famous 60-foot-tall sculptures of the faces of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln.
