History Of North Charleston
In 1680, the area was occupied primarily by plantations. The Archdale Hall Plantation and the Oak Grove Plantation was established in 1680. In 1786, Andre Michaux established the French Botanical Garden. He was botanist to Louis XVI of France. In 1901, the Charleston Naval Shipyard was established. In 1912, a group of businessmen organized the E. P. Burton Lumber Company. They bought land for the purpose of cutting and selling timber. When the timber was cut and sold, the land was put on the market. A group of men known as the North Charleston Holding Corporation bought the land and laid out streets for a town. In 1914, twelve houses were built and Mr. and Mrs. P.B. Davenport was the first residents of North Charleston. In 1935, the St. Phillip's and St. Michael's Fire Department was established. In 1937, the North Charleston Fire Department was formed. In 1972, North Charleston was incorporated as a city. In 1973, the North Charleston Police Department was formed. In 1993, the North Charleston Coliseum was built.
