History Of South Carolina

European exploration of South Carolina began in 1540. The area was settled by the English in 1670 and became the eighth state to ratify the U.S. constitution in 1788. Many African slaves where imported for labor in the 18th century. South Carolina became the first state to secede from the union in 1861.
