History Of Rhode Island
Rhode Island is the smallest of the U.S. states. Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams in 1636, who had been banished from the Massachusetts colony for his advocacy of religious tolerance and the separation of church and state. Rhode Island was the first British colony in America to formally declare its independence, doing so on May 4, 1776. During the colonial period, Newport was a major hub for shipping and trade. From the 1860s to the 1880s, most of the immigrants were from Sweden, Germany, England, Ireland and Quebec.
