History Of Allentown

In 1735, William Allen purchased land where the city now known as Allentown stands. He built a hunting and fishing lodge on the site. The site was known as Allen's little town. In 1751, the area was permanent settled. In 1762, Allentown was founded by William Allen as Northampton Town. Despite its formal name, everyone called it Allen's town. In 1767, William Allen gave the property to his son James Allen. In 1770, James Allen's summer residence, Trout Hall, was completed. In 1777, the British captured Philadelphia and the Liberty Bell was carried to Allentown where it was concealed in a local church and later returned to Philadelphia.

In 1811, the town was incorporated as the Borough of Northamptown. In 1829, Lehigh Canal opened and many businesses began to settle in Allentown. In 1838, the city's name was changed to Allentown. In 1846, Allentown Iron Company was established. In 1867, Allentown was formally incorporated as a city. In 1870, the Allentown Fire Department was founded. In 1881, the Adelaide Silk Mill opened and it was one of the largest in the world. In 1883, The Critic, todays The Morning Call, became a morning newspaper. In 1905, James Allen's summer residence, Trout Hall, was restored. In 1929, Allentown Airport opened. In 1945, the American pianist and composer Keith Jarrett was born in Allentown. In 1951, the Allentown Symphony Orchestra was founded. In 1966, the Whitehall Mall opened. In 1982, the Billy Joel song, Allentown, was released. In 1986, the Mayfair Festival of the Arts was established.
