History Of Portland

In 1805, the Lewis and Clark Expedition traveled in the area. In 1830, the site of the future city of Portland was known as the Clearing. American, Canadian, and European traders, trappers and settlers often stopped there to rest. In 1843, the business partners William Overton and Asa Lovejoy filed to claim the land of the Clearing and nearby waterfront and timber land. Settlers in the area met and elected a Sheriff the same year. Most of the people who settled in the region made their living from fish, lumber, wheat and cattle. In 1844, the settlers built farms and houses, a merchandise store, a church, and four streets and 16 blocks had been cleared. In 1845, William Overton sold his half of the land to Francis W. Pettygrove. In 1846, Asa Lovejoy sold his half of the land to Benjamin Stark. In 1847, the first sawmill and the first school was built. In 1848, Francis W. Pettygrove had lost interest in Portland and sold the entire townsite. In 1849, the first Post Office opened.

In 1850, about 850 people lived in the town and there was a hotel and the newspaper the Weekly Oregonian was published. In 1851, Portland was incorporated and the first public school opened and a jail was built. In 1855, a telegraph was operating town. In 1858, the first public school opened. In 1869, Ben Holladay started to build the railroad in Portland. In 1870, the city police force was established. In 1871, horse-drawn streetcars operated along First Street. In 1873, a fire destroyed most of town. In 1879, the citizens could make a telephone call. In 1880, electric street lights was erected. In 1883, the fire department was established. In 1887, the first zoo opened in Washington Park. In 1889, the first electric streetcars began to operate. In 1895, the City Hall was built. In 1896, the Union Station opened.

In 1907, the first Rose Festival took place. In 1912, the first rose garden, Peninsula Park's rose garden, was established. In 1917, the international Rose Test Garden was established. In 1924, the first gasoline powered bus was operating in the city. In 1928, the Jantzen Beach Amusement Park opened. In 1929, the Harbor wall was completed. In 2000, the Money Magazine declared Portland as the number one city to live in.
