History Of Oklahoma City

In 1541, Francisco Vásquez de Coronado was the first Eurpoean to explore the region. In 1889, Oklahoma City was first settled. The land was opened to settlement for the general public and the result was the legendary Land Run of 1889. In a single day, on April 22, 1889, over 10,000 people participated in the Land Run and settled in what is now downtown Oklahoma City. The Daily Oklahoman newspaper was founded and there were two companies that delivered electricity the first year. In 1890, Oklahoma City was incorporated. The word "City" was added later. The settlers called it Oklahoma Station.

In 1902, the Metropolitan Railway began with two lines in the city. The same year the Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company was formed. In 1904, Oklahoma City University, formerly known as Epworth University, was founded. In 1910, there were over 64,000 people living in the city and Oklahoma City became the state capital. In 1919, the Oklahoma State Capitol was built. In 1923, the word "City" was added to the city name. In 1928, oil was discovered in the city. In 1930, the Union Station was constructed. In 1941, the Tinker Air Force Base was built. In 1995, Oklahoma City made international headlines. Timothy McVeigh parked a truck full of explosives in front of the Alfred P. Murrah federal building. The bomb killed 168 people and injured more than 400 people. In 2000, Oklahoma City unveiled its monument to the victims of the bombing.
