History Of Albuquerque
In 1540, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, a soldier and explorer from Salamanca, Spain, came to the area. He and his men spent the winter in the area in 1540-41. The region was now named Bosque Grande de San Francisco Xavier, near the present site of Old Town in Albuquerque. Explorers came after them and in 1632, Diego de Trujillow built the first ranch in the area and it was now named Bosque Grande de San Francisco Xavier. It was near the present site of Old Town in Albuquerque. In 1706, a group of colonists were granted permission by King Philip of Spain to establish a village. The village was called Ranchos de Alburquerque, and Albuquerque was founded in 1706. The settlers were religious people, and the first building that was erected was a small church. In 1782 it collapsed but in 1783, the church was rebuilt, San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church, in what is now Old Town. In 1846, Albuquerque fell under U.S. control. In 1880, the railroad was completed. In 1879, Old Albuquerque High School was established. It was the city's first public high school.
In 1885, Albuquerque was incorporated as a town and in 1891, it was incorporated as a city. In 1889, the University of New Mexico was founded in Albuquerque. In 1902, the Alvarado Hotel was built. In 1912, New Mexico, and Albuquerque, was admitted to the USA. In 1928, the first airport, Albuquerque Airport, opened. In 1937, Central Avenue became part of Route 66. In 1939, Albuquerque Municipal Airport opened. In 1990, the Bank of Albuquerque Tower was built and it is the tallest building in Albuquerque.
