New Mexico became U.S. territory as part of the Gadsen Purchase in 1853. New Mexico did not become a U.S. state until 1912. In the 16th century, Spanish explorers came to the area. New Mexico was the site of the Manhattan Project during the World War II where the first atomic bomb was made in 1945. Roswell became a topic of speculation in 1947. A local farmer discovered unidentified debris on his property and some people believed that an alien spacecraft had crashed on the farmers property.
