History Of Jersey City
In 1609, the area was explored by the English navigator Henry Hudson. Financed by the Dutch East India Company he was trying to find a passage to Asia by setting out north and west from Europe. In 1630, Michael Pauw, an agent of the Dutch West India Company, began trading with Native Americans in todays Jersey City. In 1643, a massacre of Native Americans resulted in an eight month war with the Indians. In 1655, the area again was attacked by the Indians. In 1658, a former soldier who worked for the Dutch West India Company, Peter Stuyvesant, purchased land from the Indians and in 1660, the first village, Bergen Township, was established on what is now Bergen Square. 1661, the first public road was built. In 1662, the first Old Bergen Church was built. In 1690, the Summit House was built. It is one of Jersey City's oldest surviving houses.
In 1764, a ferry service was established. In 1776, the towns fell to the British but was in 1779 taken back. In 1820, the city of Jersey was incorporated. In 1824, the American Pottery Manufacturing Company opened. In 1825, William Colgate established a factory. In 1836, the first railroad was built and the Morris Canal extended to Jersey City. In 1861, the first City Hall was built. In 1867, Jersey City's first newspaper, The Evening Journal, was established. In 1889, the present railroad terminal was built. In 1892 came the first electric trolleys in Jersey City. In 1896, the City Hall at Grove Street and Montgomery Avenue was completed. In 1906 the first Colgate Clock was installed. In 1907, the Majestic Theater opened. In 1924, the octagonal Colgate clock was built.
