History Of Nevada

Nevada became the 36th state on October 31, 1864 and is the seventh largest of the 50 states. Gambling is legal in Nevada. Around 1770 the first Europeans came to the area. The University of Nevada was founded in Elko in 1874 and moved to Reno in 1885. In 1931, during the depression, Nevada legalized gambling. Las Vegas is known internationally for its opulent casinos and as an entertainment destination. Nevada is also home to the Hoover Dam, which was the single largest public works project in the history of the United States.
