History Of Lincoln

In 1856, Lincoln was founded as the village of Lancaster. In 1867, the city was chosen as the site of the capital in the state of Nebraska and was renamed Lincoln after President Abraham Lincoln. The same year the evening newspaper, the Lincoln Journal, was established. In 1869, the University of Nebraska was established in Lincoln. In 1870, the railroad was completed and in the same year Lincoln became a major destination for immigrants. Many came from European countries. Also the first police force in Lincoln was formed in 1870. In 1879, Lincoln's first U.S. Post Office and the Courthouse was completed.

In 1906, a new post office and courthouse was completed. The federal government sold the old building to the city and it served as Lincoln's city hall until 1969. In 1916, the Terminal Building in Lincoln was built. In 1922, the construction of the Nebraska State Capitol began and was completed in 1932. In 1923, the Memorial Stadium was completed. In 1941, Dick Cheney was born. He later became vice president of the United States under George W. Bush. In 1957, the Nebraska Governor's Mansion was built. In 1965, the Lincoln Children's Zoo opened.
