History Of Billings
In 1806, William Clark traveled through the region. In 1876, not far from Billings, the Battle of the Little Bighorn took place. In 1882, Billings was founded as a railroad town and the first brick building was erected and a post office and a bank opened and also a newspaper, the Billings-Coulson Post, came to the town. Coulson Post renamed itself the Billings-Coulson Post. In 1883, there were 400 buildings, including a school, and over 1,500 citizens in Billings. Also in 1883, there were 11 saloons on the main strips, and after a big fire, Billings Fire Brigade was established. In 1885, the town was incorporated as a city. In 1886, the first permanent school was built and the Grand Hotel opened. In 1887, electric lights was built in the town. In 1890, the first telephone system came on line.
In 1892, Preston Boyd Moss, from Paris in Missouri, moved to Billings and organized the first dial telephone company, founded a newspaper that was a forerunner of the Billings Gazette and started a central heating plant and the Billings Utility Company. He also developed the Billings Light and Water Power Company and the Northern Hotel. In 1896, Billings Opera House was opened. In 1903, the Moss Mansion House was completed. In 1906, the first sugar refinery was built. In 1914, a new Federal Building was completed. It housed the post office, courthouse, and a booming U.S. Land Office. In 1918, the Hart-Albin Building was completed. In 1921, the Billings Municipal Airport opened. In 1946, Billings had was the region's largest commercial, cultural and technological center.
