History Of Gulfport
The area was explored by the Frensh in 1699. Grass Lawn, known also as the Miller Hse, was built in 1836 by Dr. Hiram A. Roberts. In 1891, Gulfport was permanent settled. Gulfport was incorporated in 1898. In 1902, the harbor was completed. The Port of Gulfport was converted to a working seaport. In 1910, the U.S. Post Office and Customhouse was built. In 1942, the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport was built. The airport was originally constructed by the United States Army Air Forces as a training base. The city suffered severe damage from Hurricane Camille in 1969 and Katrina in 2005.
