Caddo Indians sold the land in the year of 1835 to the Shreve Town Company. In 1836, Shreveport was founded by the Shreve Town Company and was established to launch a town at the meeting point of the Red River and the Texas Trail. In 1839, the town was incorporated as Shreveport. The first fire company was formed in 1849. The large Holy Trinity Catholic Church located downtown was founded in 1858. In 1871, Shreveport became a city. The McNeill Street Pumping Station waterworks was founded in 1887 and is still in use. In 1890, the mule-drawn street cars were converted to electric-motorized cars.
The first skyscraper in the city, the Commercial National Bank Building, was built in 1910. In 1925, one of the worse fires in Shreveport's history occurred when a hot water heater exploded. Shreveport Downtown Airport was built in 1931 and in 1952, the Shreveport Regional Airport was established.
