History Of Wichita
The Wichita area was visited by the Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado in 1541. He encountered a group of Indians who have been identified by archeological and historical studies as Wichita Indians. The first white settlers came to the area around 1850, but the first recorded permanent settlement was a collection of grass houses built in 1863 by the Wichita Indians. In 1864, J. R. Mead became the first settler to open a trading post on the site of Wichita. The city was officially incorporated in 1870. In 1872, the railroad arrived. In 1895, Wichita State University in Wichita was founded as Fairmount College.
Wichita reached national fame in 1900 when Woman's Christian Temperance Union member Carrie Nation decided to carry her crusade against alcohol to Wichita. In 1914, oil was discovered and Wichita became a major oil center. In 1917, the first plane, the Cessna Comet, was manufactured in Wichita. In the 1920s and early 1930s, the aircraft corporations Stearman, Cessna, Mooney and Beech were founded in Wichita.
