History Of Cedar Rapids
In 1838, the first permanent settlers arrived. Cedar Rapids was incorporated in 1849. The city's determination to obtain a railroad connection around 1850 led to Cedar Rapids' role as a major Midwest industrial center. In 1869, the city got its first fire department. In 1871, The T.M. Sinclair Company started. It was one of the largest packing houses in the world. Cedar Rapids is still home to the largest cereal mill in the world, Quaker Oats, begun in Cedar Rapids in 1873. In 1880, Cedar Rapids built Greene's Opera House. In 1908, Cedar Rapids began development of its unique Municipal Island in the historic center of the city. The Cedar Rapids Gazette won a Pulitzer Prize in 1936. More than 300 City facilities were damaged by the Flood of 2008.
