History Of Newark
In 1694, Newark was founded by Scots-Irish and Welsh settlers. In 1726, the Cooch's Bridge was built. In 1746, the Welsh Tract Baptist Church was built. by the Welsh settlers. In 1758, Newark was officially incorporated. In 1765, Newark Academy came to the city. It was moved from New London in Pennsylvania. In 1777, the Battle of Cooch's Bridge took place. It was the only battle of the revolutionary war that was fought in Delaware. In 1798, the first a paper mill was established. The Curtis Paper Mill, was the oldest paper mill in the United States.
In, 1800, the John Evans House was built. In 1806, the original Anderson House was built. In 1812, methodists built the first church in Newark. In 1829, the State Theater building was completed. In 1831, the Mill Creek Friends Meetinghouse was completed. In 1833, the Newark College was established. In 1835, the Baily House was built. In 1837, the railroad came to the town. In 1843, the St. Thomas Episcopal Church was built. In 1845, the Bank of Newark Building and the Bell Farmhouse, was built. In 1851, the historic hotel, the Deer Park Tavern, was built. In 1852, Newark was incorporated as a city. In 1855, the first bank was established, and the White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church was built. In 1868, the Old First Presbyterian Church was built. In 1877, the Newark Station opened. In 1883, the St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church was built. In 1884, the Old Newark Comprehensive School was built. In 1885, the Newark Opera House was built. In 1890, the historic fire station was built. (Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company, Fire Station No. 1).
In 1900, about 1,200 people lived in the city. In 1910, the Newark Post was founded. In 1913, the Women's College was founded. In 1923, the Wilmington Trust Company Bank building was completed. DuPont facilities opened in the 1940's and, in 1951, the Chrysler Corporation constructed its Newark Assembly Plant. In 1989, the State Theater was demolished.
