History Of Dover

In 1631, Dutch settlers attempted to settle in the area but they were killed by the local tribe. In 1670, the English began to settle in the area. They built the Town Point in 1677, and in 1683, Dover was founded. 1697, the Kent County Courthouse was built.

In 1717, the town was officially laid out. In 1722, the downtown area "The Green"was created. Many historic building was built in the 1700s. Many of which still survive today. In 1730, the building "Loockerman Hall" was completed. In 1740, the lawyer and politician John Dickinson, built a house. The John Dickinson House, is today generally known as Poplar Hall. In 1742, the Bradford-Loockerman House was built. In 1743, the Christ Church was constructed. In 1749, the historic home "Eden Hill" was built. In 1775, the John Bullen House was built. In 1777, the capital of the state of Delaware was moved to Dover from Newcastle. In 1790, the Old Presbyterian Church was built, todays Delaware State Museum. The Delaware Governor's Mansion was also built in 1790. In 1792, the Old Statehouse was built.

In 1829, Dover was incorporated as a city. In 1856, the railroad came. Dover is fortunate to be located above an underground supply of water and began the establishment of a water system in 1881. Also in 1881, the Delaware State University was established.

In 1900, the city had electricity and electric street lights. In 1904, the former Dover Opera House was built. In 1933, the Capitol Square was laid out. International Laytex Corporation, came to Dover in 1937 and was the first major non-agricultural industry in the City. It has since become a major source of employment in the area. In 1975, the Dover Post newspaper was founded. In 1980, the Delaware Agricultural Museum and Village opened.
