History Of Hartford
Hartford was settled in 1623 as a Dutch trading post called House of Hope. In 1636, a group of English settlers led by the Reverend Thomas Hooker formed a colony in Hartford. The Hartford Courant was founded in 1764 and is the country's oldest continuously published newspaper. The nations oldest public art museum, the Wadsworth Athenaeum, was founded in 1842. The Wadsworth has nearly 50,000 works of art as part of its permanent collection. The insurance industry was created when groups of merchants began to share these risks. The practice was formalized with the creation of the Hartford Fire Insurance Group in 1810. On July 6, 1944, Hartford was the scene of one of the worst fire disasters in the history of the United States. The fire became known as the Hartford Circus Fire. The fire occurred during an circus performance that was attended by approximately 7,000 people. More than 100 people were killed in the fire.
