History Of San Francisco
San Francisco was founded in 1776. Documents shows that the first Europeans explored the San Francisco area in 1769. Yerba Buena was the original name of San Francisco. The city did not adopt the name San Francisco until 1846, which became official on January 30, 1847. With the California Gold Rush of 1848, San Francisco began to explode in population. Waves of immigrants came to the city to seek their fortunes, including large numbers of Chinese immigrants, forming one of the largest Chinese populations outside of Asia. In 1906, a devastating earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale, destroyed approximately 80% of the city. More than 3,000 people died.
