History Of Los Angeles
In 1542 the first Europeans came to the Los Angeles region. 44 settlers of European, African and Amerindian ancestry founded the city in September 4, 1781. The name first given to the city is debated. There are two versions: One version is that the settlers named it El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciuncula (The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of the Porciuncula River). And another version is that the settlers named the city to El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora de los Angeles de Porciuncula (The town of Our Lady of the Angels of Porciuncula). However, the area they settled is today the historic district of Los Angeles Pueblo Plaza and Olvera Street, and of course the oldest part of Los Angeles. In 1870s, about 5,000 people lived in the city. The year 1900, there were over 100,000 people in the city. They came to work and develop Los Angeles into a great city. They worked at the railway, the harbor, in banks and factories and at the oil fields. By 1930, over 1,2 million people lived in the city.
