History Of Mesa
Mesa was founded in January 1878 by Mormon pioneers. The Post Office at the time used different names of the city. Postal authorities considered the name Mesa unacceptable at first. But the town itself was always called Mesa City and in 1889 the Post Office finally allowed the name Mesa City. In 1879, the first school was built. The former Lehi School, built in 1913, is the oldest standing school building in Mesa today. The Mesa Historical Museum was built in 1913-1914. The public airport Falcon Field and the Williams Air Force Base opened in 1941 and military workers began to move into Mesa in the 40s.
