History Of Mesa
Mesa was founded in January 1878 by Mormon pioneers. In 1879, the first school was built. The Post Office at the time used different names of the city. Postal authorities considered the name Mesa unacceptable at first. In 1883, Mesa City was incorporated as a town. The town itself was always called Mesa City and in 1889 the Post Office allowed the name Mesa City. In 1885, the railroad was completed.
The former Lehi School, built in 1913, is the oldest standing school building in Mesa today. The Mesa Historical Museum was built in 1913-1914. In 1914, the main building to Mesa Historical Museum was completed. In 1927, the Mesa Arizona Temple was completed. In 1930, Mesa was incorporated as a city. The public airport Falcon Field and the Williams Air Force Base opened in 1941 and military workers began to move into Mesa in the 40s. In 1977, the Arizona Museum of Natural History was founded. In 1979, the Mesa Amphitheatre was built. It is an outdoor concert venue in the city. In 1987, the Mesa Historical Museum opened.
