The first European to explore the Juneau area was Joseph Whidbey, who explored the region in JulyAugust 1794. The town was originally called Harrisburg, but some time later, its name was changed to Rockwell. In 1881, the people in the town voted that the town should have the name Juneau, after Joe Juneau, who was a miner and prospector from Canada. He was buried in the city's Evergreen Cemetery on August 16, 1903. The Alaska State Capitol in downtown Juneau was originally built as the Federal and Territorial Building in 1931.
