The beautiful park is over 6 million acres large that includes mountains, glacial lakes, frozen tundra, and massive expanses of forest. The park attracts over 400,000 visitors annually. People come to explore the nature, the wildlife, the mountains, for fishing, hunting, hiking, backpacking, and in the winter for skiing, dog-sledding, and more. It is home to Mt. McKinley, the highest mountain in North America, and the park is one of the most popular destination in Alaska.
Denali National Park History
In 1906, and again in 1907-08, Charles Sheldon, an amateur naturalist, and Harry Karstens, later the park's first superintendent, spent the winter in a cabin in the area. They came up with the idea to make the area the world's first national park to conserve wildlife. In 1915, Charles Sheldon laid out the park plan to the Chief of the U.S. Biological Survey. In 1917, a bill to establish the park passed both houses of Congress and the park was established as a wildlife refuge named Mount McKinley National Park. In 1976, the park was designated, as an international biosphere reserve, by President Jimmy Carter. In 1980 the park was renamed Denali National Park and Preserve.
Popular Animals In The Park And Precautions
The park has large dall sheep populations and is home to grizzly bears, black bears, mooses, gray wolf dens, wolverines, foxes, hoary marmots, squirrels, beavers, lynx, hares, caribou roams and many more animal species. The bears are wild creatures and you should be alert at all times. No pets and don't make any noise, talk or sing, when hiking in park areas where the bears are present.
