History Of Montgomery
In 1540, Hernando De Soto and his fellow Spanish explorers visited todays Montgomery. In 1716, the Scottish trader James McQueen settled here. He was the first permanent European settler in the Montgomery area. In 1717, the French Fort Toulouse was built.
In 1814, Arthur Moore and his companions built cabins on local riverbanks. The town was incorporated on December 3, 1819 and was named for General Richard Montgomery. In 1821, the first steamboats reached the town. In 1822, a courthouse was built. In 1829, the newpaper, the Montgomery Advertiser, was founded. In 1832, the Montgomery Railroad opened. The state capital moved from Tuscaloosa to Montgomery, on January 28, 1846. In 1847, the first Capitol building was erected. In 1886 Montgomery became the first city in the USA to install city-wide electric street cars. In 1898, the city had a paid fire department.
In 1910, the Maxwell Air Force Base was built. In 1919, Nat King Cole was born in the city. In 1930, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts was established. In 1935, the Montgomery Zoo opened. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man. The Montgomery Bus Boycott started after that incident. The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a protest campaign against the racial segregation on its public transit system and Dr. Martin Luther King led numerous of non violent protests. In 1967, a devastating fire broke out at Dale's Penthouse and 26 people lost their lives. In 2004, the Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium opened.
